BACKGROUND. Danish documentary filmmakers have greatly expanded their networks in recent years. International partners especially appreciate the Danish knack for making audiences think for themselves. Here's an outline of current co-production trends.

Lübeck jury moved by Heartstone
AWARDS. Gudmundur Arnar Gudmundsson received the NDR Film Prize at the 58th Nordic Film Days Lübeck for his film debut "Heartstone," and Jesper W. Nielsen was honoured with the Audience Prize for "The Day Will Come."
Trine Dyrholm nominated for European Film Award
NOMINATION. For her role in Thomas Vinterberg's "The Commune," Trine Dyrholm receives one of the five nominations for European Actress 2016. This year's "European Oscars" will be held on 10 December in Wroclaw in Poland.
Living in Limbo

INTERVIEW. An Afghan girl, Rokhsar, and her family have been waiting for years to have their fates decided by the Danish asylum authorities. Emil Langballe's documentary "The Wait" looks at people trapped in an alienating system.

Daring Dreams and Fraught Friendship

INTERVIEW. With a starry-eyed dream of being the first amateurs to fly into space, two Danes enthusiastically start building a rocket. But over time, their disagreements mount. Max Kestner, one of Denmark's foremost documentary storytellers, goes for comedy as well as complexity in his new film "Amateurs in Space."

Godless wins at CPH PIX

AWARD. Ralitza Petrova's feature debut "Godless," a story depicting the harsh life in a remote Bulgarian town, was honoured with the main prize at CPH PIX, a festival with a keen eye on new directors.

IN PRODUCTION. Matt Dillon and Bruno Ganz will be taking the lead roles in Lars von Trier's next film, the serial killer story "The House That Jack Built."
May el-Toukhy receives talent award
HONOUR. Director May el-Toukhy was in the spotlight Thursday evening at the opening of CPH PIX where she received the annual Nordisk Film talent award.
We Have to Tell the Whole Truth
INTERVIEW. Nicolo Donato's second feature, "Across the Waters," is inspired by the director's grandfather, who sailed Danish Jews to safety in Sweden during World War II. The film attempts to paint a full picture of the Jewish escape in 1943, including the parts that portray their Danish rescuers in a less than flattering light.
