The Salvation to Cannes

CANNES. Kristian Levring's large-scale western drama "The Salvation" with Mads Mikkelsen is among the Official Selection of the 67th Cannes Film Festival.

The Cannes Film Festival announced today the 2014 Official Selection, and among the films to venture to Cannes 14-25 May is Kristian Levring's "The Salvation", which is selected for an out-of-competition Gala screening.

"The Salvation" is a large-scale western drama rooted in Scandinavia – a tale of revenge, blood feud, lost love and greed.

The story takes place in America in the 1870s. When settler John kills his family’s murderer, he unleashes the fury of the notorious gang leader Delarue. Betrayed by his corrupt and cowardly community, the peaceful pioneer must turn vengeful hunter, slay the outlaws, and cleanse the town’s black heart.

Mads Mikkelsen plays the Danish settler John, and the international cast also includes Eva Green, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Mikael Persbrandt and Jonathan Pryce.

Kristian Levring was one of the four original Dogme brothers. His Dogme film "The King Is Alive" premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in 2000 in Un Certain Regard, while his latest film "Fear Me Not" (2009) played at a string of festivals including San Sebastian and Toronto.

"The Salvation" is written by Anders Thomas Jensen and Kristian Levring. Anders Thomas Jensen was also co-writer on Levring's "Fear Me Not" and "The King Is Alive." Cinematographer on "The Salvation" is Jens Schlosser, and Pernille Bech Christensen edited the film. Sisse Graum Jørgensen has produced for Zentropa with support from the Danish Film Institute.
