DOX:AWARD. "Last Men in Aleppo" won the main award at CPH:DOX' first spring edition.

"Last Men in Aleppo," directed by Feras Fayyad with co-director Steen Johannessen, won the main DOX:AWARD at CPH:DOX (16-26 March).

The film has a "devastating emotional immediacy that plunges us into a Shakespearean tragedy of a people striving to retain their humanity in the face of impossible realities," the jury stated at the awards ceremony Friday evening at Kunsthal Charlottenborg in Copenhagen.

Winner of Sundance's international documentary prize in January, "Last Men in Aleppo" is made to a large extent from footage by video journalists from Aleppo Media Center, placing its audience in the midst of the daily life of local White Helmet rescue workers.

The award for best Nordic documentary went to "Land of the Free" by Camilla Magid, a film about taking your life in your own hands in a tough neighbourhood in Los Angeles.
