Producer, born 6 March 1970. Holds an MA in International Development Studies and Communication from Roskilde University, Denmark. A graduate of Eurodoc (2003) and EAVE (2010). Has produced films since 1998 and founded her award-winning company Final Cut for Real in 2009.
Notable films include Joshua Oppenheimer's award-winning, two-piece work scrutinising the Indonesian genocide, 'The Act of Killing' (2012) and 'The Look of Silence' (2014). Both films were Oscar-nominated and toured the international festival circuit, winning many awards, including at the Berlinale, Venice, CPH:DOX and Cinema Eye Honors. Also nominated for an Oscar was 'Strong Island' (Yance Ford, 2017). 'Songs of Repression' (2020) won the main prize at CPH:DOX.
'Flee' (2021) was selected for Cannes Film Festival, won the World Cinema Grand Jury Prize at Sundance and has since toured festivals around the world, including in Annecy, Telluride, Toronto and New York, winning a number of awards. The film was nominated in three categories for the Oscars 2022.
Byrge Sørensen has directed several documentaries, including 'In Language We Live' (2006) and 'The Importance of Being Mlabri' (2007), both co-directed with Janus Billeskov Jansen. 'Our Memory Belongs to Us' (2021, co-directed with Rami Farah) won a special mention at CPH:DOX and was selected for IDFA.
Byrge Sørensen has also co-produced a string of international documentaries.
