Mr. Catra - o fiel

Andreas Johnsen, 2004

This is the first documentary about Baile Funk and an intimate portrait of its biggest star; Mr Catra aka Wagner Domingues Costa. Baile Funk is a remarkable form of music developed in the shantytowns of Rio de Janeiro and for the millions residing in the favelas and periferia of Rio, the controversial Mr Catra is their greatest hero. Mr Catra's lyrics are so explicit that the Brazilian police have coined the term Funk Proibido and have outlawed this particular genre of Baile Funk.

The dream of riches and a blind faith in progress forced the project: The railroad was to carry rubber to the growing industry of the rich world. The project came up against problems from the start, but was carried through in spite of incomprehensible human costs.
