Torben Skjødt Jensen, 1999

Denmark's great package holiday king Simon Spies (his surname meaning "eat" in English) coined the phrase "Eat, travel, and be happy". The eccentric, later to become a multi-millionaire, despatched the first coach-loads of tourists to Mallorca in 1957. Six years later his company had a turnover of 30 million Danish kroner a year.

In Norway Petter Stordalen is in the middle of the biggest crisis of his career. At Spies in Copenhagen they are struggling with cash flow because of the many refunds from the huge number of cancellelations. At Phuket in Thailand 90% of the country's income derives directly from tourism and beach masseuses Tip and Karn are not earning any money.

Spies is forced to fire a large part of the staff and among these the stewardess Helle who has worked for the company more than 31 years. In Norway Petter Stordalen is forced to sell out of his properties to secure liquidity and Karn in Thailand decides to go to a monastery to find some peace of mind.

The world has now turned completely red, and no one can travel anywhere. Lisbeth decides to quit her job on her mothers' death bed and Helle gets a job at a covid test centre. Petter Stordalen however, firmly believes that there is a light at the end of the tunnel.
