On 4 September Frederick Albert Cook (1865-1940) arrived in Copenhagen on the ship ‘Hans Egede’. He received a hero’s welcome as the first man to set foot on the North Pole. He was greeted by the king, and given an honorary doctorate at the University of Copenhagen.

The expedition left Denmark 24 July 1906 under the leadership of Ludvig Mylius Erichsen (b. 1872). The main task was to chart the coastline of North-eastern Greenland.

In 1898 the production of diesel engines was commenced at Burmeister & Wain in Copenhagen. In 1912 the first diesel motor ship, ‘Selandia’, was launched. The engineering endeavor received much acclaim both domestically and abroad.
