Den umulige time

Jørgen Leth, 1975

A concentrated study of Ole Ritter's attempt to recapture the most compelling and most difficult record set in professional cycling: a one-hour, one-man race on a track. The attempts to break the record took place in Mexico City in November 1974. The film includes a description of Ritter's special training on a sophisticated purpose-built track bike and the psychological conditioning required for achieving a concentrated performance at this level.

En forårsdag i helvede

Jørgen Leth, 1977

Director and poet Jørgen Leth is, amongst other things, obsessed with bicycle racing as a ritual expression of human victory and defeat, and from this obsession he has made the unique "A Sunday in Hell". The Sunday is April 11th, 1976, when the classic and grueling annual bicycle race Paris-Roubaix was held, and the Hell is the cobblestone field roads of Northern France, where the champions of bicycle racing battle for victory. With an army of photographers, Jørgen Leth followed the race in all of its details, and he has edited the footage into a mythic and documentary spectacular.

Stjernerne og vandbærerne

Jørgen Leth, 1974

The film has been made during the great, classic cycle race "Giro d'Italia", which Jørgen Leth followed during the 22 days it took, together with Swedish photographer Dan Holmberg and the author Ebbe Traberg as sound engineer. This race is pictured as a novel with the competing heroes of the professional cycling in a number of dramatic incidents. This film tells about the tactical game behind the scenes and about the professional racer's ideas of honour and the unwritten laws which he has to observe, if he will not be left out.

Fra hjertet til hånden

Tómas Gislason, 1994

»I have my children in Denmark, and I live in Haiti.« In this way Jørgen Leth, poet, journalist, expert commentator of bicycle races and above all film director, starts his film - or rather the film about himself. For once Jørgen Leth is not behind the camera, but in front of it as the main character.

De Kongelige paa Cykler i Fredensborg Slotsgaard

Peter Elfelt, 1903

Fredensborg castle in North Zealand was the base of the so-called 'Fredensborg Days' in the period 1880-1898, where King Christian IX and Queen Louise would gather the family. The tradition petered out after the death of Czar Alexander III in 1894 and Queen Louise in 1898. The images nevertheless give an impression of the relaxed atmosphere at the castle.
