In 2010, Danish director Mads Brügger received an email. It was a man, who had seen a documentary Mads made about North Korea and asked if he would be interested in making a new film. This one should be about this man - ‘The Mole’ - and his quest to become an undercover member of his local North Korean ‘friendship’ association in Denmark.

They are tasked with finding a location in a ‘friendly’ country where they can carry out their covert plans, and flies to Uganda, where a private island is for sale.
