Animator/animation director Jannik Hastrup did three films (se also "Trællenes børn", 1980, and "Trællenes oprør", 1979), each divided up in three episodes, all with the general theme of slaves under the thumb of oppressors. Using a consciously cut-out animation technique, this first trio of episodes covers the Viking Age, the introduction of Christianity, and an early revolt of thralls in abt. A.

In the third instalment of Jannik Hastrup's animation trilogy (see also "Trællene", 1978, and "Trællenes oprør", 1979) we have moved up through history to the year 1633, when an unwed mother is burned at the stake, while the child's father is fined a minor amount of money; to the year 1742 when two young orphans are sentenced to hard labor for begging; and to 1860 when a young girl flees the employ of a murderous midwife.

The first of two sequels to Jannik Hastrup's animation history lesson trilogy on the theme of human slavery that commenced with "Trællene", 1978, and winds with "Trællenes børn", 1980. In 1349, the Black Plague rages and forces a girl into marriage with a victim; in 1450, a boy takes part in a peasants' revolt; and in 1542, a 14-year-old girl joins a rebellion and kills a bailiff.
