French President François Mitterrand decides to launch an international architectural competition for the flagship project of his mandate: The Great Arch of La Défense, aligned with the Louvre and the Arc de Triomphe in Paris. Against all odds, Johan Otto von Spreckelsen, a Danish architect, wins the competition.

Mme Schakie was born in Paris into excentric and bohemian circles. She qualified as a modiste, a milliner, and created a niche for herself with her exclusive, hand-made paper hats which she makes for the big cabarets and hotels abroad. We watch how the hats are made in the rather humble workshops and how the collection is shown at the best hotels in London and the apotheosis - New Year's eve!
