Cairo skrald

Mikala Krogh, 2009

Once upon a time there was a city that was neat and tidy, and which was home to only 12 million people. Today, however, Cairo has a population estimated at 20 million. Garbage is piling up in the streets and the piles are growing.

Bogota forvandling

Andreas Dalsgaard, 2009

A vaccine against crime. Weapons melted down for baby cutlery. »Bogotá Change« is the story of two charismatic mayors, Antanas Mockus and Enrique Peñalosa who, with unorthodox methods, in less than 10 years turned one of the world's most dangerous, violent and corrupt capitals into a peaceful model city populated by caring citizens.

Film

Shanghai Space

Nanna Frank Møller, 2009

Shanghai is an explosion of transformation. Every other day a new building is completed, and every year the city's population grows by half a million people. Authorities are desperately seeking out more space, while the city's inhabitants must adapt to constantly changing surroundings.

Mumbai Disconnected

Frederik Jacobi, Camilla Nielsson, 2009

Like a city on steroids, Mumbai is rapidly becoming one of the world's biggest megacities. But it's all happening on a narrow peninsula with an infrastructure on the verge of complete collapse. Every day, 10-12 people die from falling off the overcrowded public trains.

Film

Laurine og Nørrebro

Lise Roos, 1984

About the development in the part of Copenhagen called 'Den sorte firkant' in Nørrebro. What happened when the ramparts fell and what lay beyond them became overbuilt areas? For a year, the film crew followed today's way of handling a whole quarter with slum clearance and that redevelopment referred to at the town hall as the 'Overall Plan' through the eyes of Laurine, Denmark's oldest squatter.

Cathedrals of Culture: The Oslo Opera House

Margreth Olin, 2014

In 2008, an elegant new neighbor designed by Snøhetta architects settled along Oslo's struggling waterfront in the center of the city. The Oslo Opera House, home to the Norwegian Opera and Ballet, now rises from the fjord, coaxing visitors to its seemingly endless marble roof and to its graceful interior. The building's breathtaking design blurs the spatial divisions between inside and outside offering a unique blend of relaxation, recreation, and high culture.

Film

Livet mellem husene

Lars Oxfeldt Mortensen, 2000

Jan Gehl, a Danish architect has spent a generation studying our behavioral patterns in cities. In this film Gehl travels around the Nordic cities and explains why some cities are inviting and how others actually repel us, leaving us cold. It's not a question of being aesthetically beautiful or ugly, but rather a question of whether a city-center is suited to our senses and movements.

Film

The Human Scale

Andreas Dalsgaard, 2012

50% of the world's population lives in urban areas. By 2050 this will increase to 80%. Life in a megacity is both enchanting and problematic.

Film

Last Exit Alexanderplatz

Hans Christian Post, 2015

There is an ongoing, but politically disputed and so far unsuccessful attempt to transform the former East-German Alexanderplatz into a high-end, Manhattan-like business district. Through interviews with the architects and politicians, who were involved in the competition held for the square in 1993, the film highlights the dogmatism and insensitivity that characterized much of planning in post-reunification Berlin. But it also depicts a square, which despite the failures and missed opportunities of the 1990s, seems to have regained its foothold in the city.
