Pilou Asbæk Danish Shooting Star

NOMINATION. Pilou Asbæk is selected as one of ten young acting talents to be showcased at the Berlin Film Festival 2011. His latest performance was the lead in the hard-hitting prison drama "R", one of this year's remarkable Danish feature film debuts.

The Berlin audience made Pilou Asbæk's acquaintance at the last edition of the filmfest. Running in the official competition was Pernille Fischer Christensen's "A Family" with Asbæk on the cast. Now the young actor is back on the red carpet in the German capital. He is one of the ten European acting talents selected as Shooting Stars 2011 who are to be presented during the coming festival (10-20 February).

After several minor roles in tv series, 28-year-old Pilou Asbæk had his first major role on film in Niels Arden Oplev's "Worlds Apart" and his first lead in Michael Noer and Tobias Lindholm's "R", a film that has reaped attention for its gritty realism and, not least, Asbæk's strong performance as an inmate who tries to adapt to the unrelenting hierarchy of prison life.

The Shooting Star jury comments: "Vibrant, emotionally complex and intense, Pilou projects a masculine physicality tempered by a romantic sensitivity which are seen at their best in the tough prison movie 'R'."

The Shooting Stars programme, organised by European Film Promotion, will be showcasing the ten actors during the first weekend of the Berlinale. The award ceremony will take place in the Berlinale Palast on Monday, 14 February.

More news about Danish films and filmmakers in Berlin will be published as the various programmes are announced by the festival.
