MERE OM AWA KONATÉ OG CULTURE ART SOCIETY (PÅ ENGELSK):
Awa Konaté is a London and Copenhagen based Danish-Ivorian writer/researcher, curator, and founder of the research platform Culture Art Society ( CAS ). Her work explores the interfacing of visual culture, archival theory and Black liberatory conceptualisations in the lines of institutional critique. Her research is committed to a philosophy of accessibility that circumvents hierarchies of cultural canons . She has been published in Third Text, Paletten art Journal, Widewalls Magazine, The Funambulist Magazine and more.
Culture Art Society (CAS) is an interdisciplinary research platform founded in 2013 that intersects critical studies and art theory to research the cultural economy of African archives (continental + diaspora). The platform’s multidisciplinary approach spans literature, the moving image and visual arts to form a critical curatorial praxis called memory work. These practises methodise archives to affect and (re)inform engagements to contemporary relations and new modes of knowledge production.
CAS is committed to raising awareness of African cultural activism, and critically celebrating the expansiveness of the Black Radical tradition through educational public programming, projects and other collaborative networks.

Sembènes første film – eftersigende den første film optaget i det sorte Afrika, af en afrikaner, om en afrikaner – er en 20 minutter lang skildring af en vognførers travle hverdag i den senegalesiske hovedstad Dakar. Han kører en slags primitiv taxi og udnyttes af stort set alt og alle. Sembène formår at give stemme og ansigt til mennesker på samfundets bund. Selv har han udtalt: ”Hvis afrikanere ikke fortæller deres egne historier, vil Afrika snart forsvinde.”

Slavelignende vilkår venter senegalesiske Diouana, da hun kvitter Dakar for Rivieraen. Hun er blevet lovet en stilling som guvernante hos et fransk ægtepar, men står snart også for rengøringen og madlavningen. I filmens mest ubehagelige scene stilles hun til skue for parrets venner til et middagsselskab og udsættes for racistiske kommentarer og seksuelle tilnærmelser. Sembènes spillefilmsdebut er kortfattet og usentimental – og båret af flotte sort/hvid-kompositioner og uafrystelige skuspilpræstationer.
