‘Du skal ære din Hustru’ er lidt af en overset perle – og et stærkt feministisk kammerspil. Det var dens enorme popularitet i samtiden, der gjorde, at Dreyer blev inviteret til at indspille ‘Jeanne d’Arc’ på fransk grund. Den handler om Viktor (Johannes Meyer), en hustyran, der koster rundt med sin kone Ida (Astrid Holm), så det halve kunne være nok. Viktors gamle barnepige Mads (Mathilde Nielsen) sender Ida på tiltrængt ferie og overtager hjemmet. Nu kommer der andre boller på suppen, og Viktor lærer – på den hårde måde – at ‘ære sin hustru’. Filmen er en filmatisering af Svend Rindoms teaterstykke ‘Tyrannens Fald’.
‘Master of the House’ is something of an overlooked gem. Its enormous popularity back in its own day led to Dreyer being invited to France to film ‘The Passion of Joan of Arc’. The story revolves around Viktor (Johannes Meyer), a tyrannical husband who harries his long-suffering wife Ida (Astrid Holm). Viktor’s former nanny, Mads (Mathilde Nielsen), sends Ida on a much-needed vacation and takes over the household. This shakes things up, forcing Viktor to learn – the hard way – to ‘honour thy wife’. The film is an adaptation of Svend Rindom’s play ‘The Fall of the Tyrant’.
