Danish on a Sunday

Danish film hits - with English subtitles

We are often asked if the Cinematheque could please show some of the Danish films that foreign audiences have heard of and would appreciate – if only they were subtitled in English. Now we indulge that wish.

Danish also means Danish pastry! Before each screening, we have a special offer of a coffee with Danish pastry (or a piece of cake) at Restaurant SULT. It costs only 40 DKR extra.

MørkeDanish

Sunday 26. May 14:15 / Murk (Mørke)

‘Murk’ is an atmospheric psychological thriller that tells the story of journalist Jacob (Nikolaj Lie Kaas) who grows suspicious of the circumstances surrounding his disabled sister’s death on her wedding night. She supposedly committed suicide, but Jacob seeks out his seemingly jovial former brother-in-law Anker (Nicolas Bro) in a quest for answers. Jacob finds Anker in the village of Mørke in rural Jutland and is startled to learn that Anker is about to marry another disabled woman!

Dir.: Jannik Johansen, 2005 / 125 mins. / English subtitles

Jagtendanish

Sunday 09. June 14:15 / The Hunt (Jagten)

‘The Hunt’ is the masterful new drama from Thomas Vinterberg, director of Dogme sensation 'The Celebration' (1998). Following a tough divorce, 40-year-old Lucas has a new girlfriend, a new job and is working on re-establishing his relationship with his teenage son. But things go awry. Not a lot. Just a passing remark. A random lie. Shock and mistrust get out of hand, and the small community suddenly finds itself in a state of collective hysteria.

Dir.: Thomas Vinterberg, 2012 / 111 mins. / English subtitles

De-fem-danish

Sunday 23. June 14:15 / The Five Obstructions (De fem benspænd)

Documentary exercise 'The Five Obstructions' consists of Vinterberg’s Dogme blood brother Lars von Trier challenging colleague Jørgen Leth to attempt five remakes of the latter’s groundbreaking short film 'The Perfect Human' (1967), a reflection on human behaviour. Trier sets up a string of limitations, constraining Leth to re-think the story and the characters of the original film. Playing the naive anthropologist, Leth tries to embrace the taunts put forward by the devious Trier.

Dir.: Jørgen Leth, Lars von Trier, 2003 / 92 mins. / English subtitles
