En barsk coming of age-fortælling om ’rødtoppen’ François, der som den yngste søn i familien Lepic er født ”efter at forældrene var holdt op med at elske hinanden”, som mellemteksterne skriver. Han er uønsket af sin mor, som konstant ydmyger ham, og netop portrættet af moderen, der fra filmens begyndelse beskrives som sladrende og hyklerisk, er måske det eneste ved filmen, der ikke er ældet med ynde. For i øvrigt byder filmen på både naturalistisk skuespil og en imponerende visuel fortællestil med mange overraskende vinkler, perspektiver og dobbelteksponeringer. Duvivier, der senere instruerede film som ’Pépé le Moko’, udråbte selv ’Poil de carotte’ som den af hans mange stumfilm, han holdt mest af.
This harsh coming-of-age story follows ‘Carrot Top’ François, the youngest son of the Lepic family, who is described in the intertitles as being born ‘after the parents stopped loving each other’. He is unwanted by his mother, who subjects him to constant humiliation. Indeed, the portrayal of the mother, depicted as gossiping and hypocritical from the outset, is perhaps the only aspect of this film that has not aged well. Other than this, the film’s naturalistic acting and stunning visual storytelling, with unexpected angles and double exposures, remain remarkable. Director Julien Duvivier, who later made ‘Pépé le Moko’, considered this his favourite among his many silent films. The film is screened accompanied by a score by Antonio Coppola.
