Win-Win Adoptions?

IDFA FORUM 2011. For many Western childless parents adoption is a win-win situation. Unfortunate orphans are provided with parents and the childless are blessed with children. But behind the dream lies anoher reality. In "Mercy Mercy", Katrine Kjær shows the flip side of international adoption.

It seemed a perfect match, until adoption became big business in Africa. Now, as director Katrine Kjær shows in her documentary "Mercy Mercy", children are increasingly being treated as a commodity.

Ethiopia has five million orphans and holds the world record in adoptions. Yet the demand for infants in the West has surpassed the number of children suitable for adoption. A great deal of the adopted children in Ethiopia is not orphans, but already have parents who could support their children for a fragment of the cost of the adoption. 

"Mercy Mercy" tells the true story of an adoption between an African and Western family, seen from both sides. We follow the families for more than three years as the adoption goes wrong.

Kjær wishes to demonstrate that part of the adoption industry puts commercial interests above human needs and that innocent children are victims of an absurd supply and demand system.

Inspired by tales of globalisation such as Iñárritu's Babel, "Mercy Mercy" also draws on the epic style of Fridthjof
Film's highly successful Armadillo which had Sara Stockmann as producer.

Katrine Kjær has worked as a director and producer of documentary, primarily for primetime TV, since 1999.

I have exactly the same question as Jebelini. Not only Mosho, but also the biological parents should be notified about the situation. Isn't it absurd that Mosho ends up in an orphanage, while her biological parents in fact gave her away for adoption more or less by mistake (because they thought they would die within a couple of years, but they didn't) and adopted another child! Could the filmmakers not inform the parents? Although I understand it is not your job as a filmmaker to mediate, it would have been easy to inform the biological parents what was happening in Denmark.

Is there any action being ubdertaken to help reunite Mosho with her biological parents or to show this this incredible film so she knows how much she is missed by her parents and family and how they long for her. She has a right to know she was not just given away, to know the truth and to be given an opportunity to finally make a choice about her own life.
