For en jaloux anlagt ægtemand kan en hundehvalp sagtens forveksles med et uægte barn. Hr. Vibe vil ikke kendes ved familiens nye hund og ved derfor ikke, at fru Vibe døber hunden Ophelia. Ved skæbnens ironi efterlades et forældreløst barn på familiens dørtrin. Samtidig finder hr. Vibe et brev med en bøn om at tage sig af lille Ophelia. Hr. Vibe bliver nu gal af jalousi i troen om at Ophelia er fruens barn uden for ægteskab.
