MAKING BOOKS FOR CHILDREN - FROM IMAGINATION TO PRINT
with Alexandra Boiger
9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., September 16, 2018

I offer an introduction into the world and art of making books for children. My lecture aims to give an overview of what the making of a book in tales as well as a short summary of the history of children's books in general. The creation of a book for children is the creation of a new world, usually packed into 32-40 pages. Every picture counts. Every word counts. A subtle balance between just enough and not too much. It is full of imagination, psychology, history, character development, wisdom and - in a best case scenario - becomes a cozy safety pillow for the child and parent, not just for the duration of reading and sharing the story, but for all of their lives.
Storytelling is a fundamental pillar of every society. Telling stories in pictures is one of the most ancient and important parts of what it means to be a human. It reflects our cultures - and it contributes in shaping them throughout the world and history. In a picture book story and art are working together as ONE. Substance and style are the key elements. Coming from the right place is crucial: the passion for the subject and the making of it.
