"The Lady of Hamre" is a portrayal of a woman's life and fate at the end of the 19th century, communicated in a visually bold, stylised form. Gentle Bente True, heiress to Hamre, the family estate, promises her father on his death bed that his will shall be done; she will marry Gorm Trolle from the great estate next door. The marriage to the coarse Gorm turns into a power struggle between the two of them. Who actually runs Hamre? Bente's goodness goads Gorm into humiliating her, but he, too, is a pawn in a game he cannot see through. In a parallel plot, Bente must rescue her younger sister, Grethe, who is in love with and married to a merchant's Oedipal son, and whose mother-in-law has spent half of her inheritance.
