VAF call for submissions

Submissions for the next Viborg Animation Festival (VAF) are now open. Deadlines: Earlybird (January 15, 2023) - Regular (March 21, 2023) - Late (April 10, 2023).

This years Viborg Animation Festival film program is all about presenting great film experiences, where the audience meets and experiences the artists' desire to tell stories and to experiment with animation as craftsmanship.

In addition to the film program VAF also presents workshops, exhibitions, talks, cultural events and an vast industry track featuring seminars and conferences.

What is VAF?

Viborg Animation Festival (VAF) is a non profit festival and is held each year at the end of September in Viborg, region of Jutland, Denmark.

Categories and fees

VAF Best Feature Film. VAF Best Animated feature includes all internationally produced animation films of any genre. The length of the films is minimum 40 minutes including credit.

VAF Best Short Film. VAF Best Short Animated Film includes all internationally produced films of any genre or style. The length of the films must not exceed 20 minutes including credits.

VAF Best Graduation Film. VAF Best Graduation Film includes all internationally graduation animated films from art and animation schools. Mix techniques, including live action, accepted. The length of the films must not exceed 20 minutes including credits.

ANIMOK Youth Jury Award. ANIMOK Youth Jury Award. The short films in this competition are aimed at young people aged 12-14. ANIMOK Youth Jury Award is giving to a short film selected by a group of young kids age 12-13 years old.

VAF Best Experimental Short Film. VAF Best Experimental film includes all internationally produced animation films which relates experimentally to animation, both in technique and in storytelling. VAF Best Experimental film is about breaking the laws of nature and the limits of what one can do with animation technically. The length of the films must not exceed 20 minutes including credits.

Open Workshop Danish Talent Award. Open Workshop Danish Talent Award includes all Danish produced animation films of any genre or style. The length of the films must not exceed 30 minutes including credits. Prize of 20.000 DKK (€2600) + a residency in Open Workshop.

VAF Best Commissioned Work. VAF Best Commissioned work includes all international produced animation short films for educational or industrial use or music videos, tourist film, commercials and campaign and dissemination films. VAF Best Commissioned work includes all international produced animation short films of any genre or style. The length of the films must not exceed 30 minutes including credits. Prize of €1000

VAF Diversity Film Award. VAF Diversity Film Award is an international category eligible for any genre of animated short film. The film can be no more than 20 minutes (incl. credits) and has to be fully or partially animated. The category aims to showcase stories from underrepresented groups, focusing on issues in minority groups such as sexual orientation, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, gender, disabilities, or others.

Entry requirements

  1. It is eligible for any film created frame by frame, in any technique (analogue, digital or mixed).
  2. All genres are welcome.
  3. Language: All films must have English subtitles also when the spoken language is English.
  4. Duration of the film (including credits):
    Feature Film: min. 40 minutes.
    Short Film: max. 20 minutes.
    Experimental Short Film: max. 20 minutes
    Student Film: max. 20 minutes
    ANIMOK Youth Jury - Short films for children: max. 20 minutes
    Open Workshop Danish Animation Talent Award: max. 30 min
  5. Film must be completed in 2022 or 2023
  6. VAF does not accept re-submissions from previous years
  7. Films can be submitted for more than one category, e.g. VAF Best Short and VAF Best Experimental.
  8. The applicant should not charge screening fees to the festival, regarding the screening of films in competition.
  9. Only online digital submission.
  10. For cinema screening formats must be PRORES. For selection screening low quality copies are accepted.
  11. If you want to submit a commissioned film, you can submit your film in the category "Viborg Visual Best Commissioned Film". We do not accept commissioned films for: VAF BEST feature, VAF BEST short, VAF Best Experimental, ANIMOK Youth jury and VAF Best student film (e.g. educational, industrial, advertising, tourist films etc.)
