At der indtil starten af 1930’erne ikke var lyd på filmen, betød som bekendt ikke, at stumfilmforestillingerne var stumme. De største biografteatre havde store orkestre på lønningslisten, andre rådede kun over en enkelt pianist. Britiske Stephen Horne bliver betragtet som en af nutidens førende stumfilmmusikere. Han har spillet ved festival-forestillinger over hele verden og indspillet musik til en lang række DVD-udgivelser. Han er først og fremmest pianist, men i sine koncerter inddrager han også andre instrumenter, bl.a. tværfløjte, harmonika og klokkespil, undertiden simultant. I 2022 komponerede han sit første score for stort symfoniorkester – til Henry Kings ’Stella Dallas’ (1925), som vi viser under festivalen med Stephens musik.
THE SOUND OF SILENT FILM: MASTERCLASS WITH STEVEN HORNE
As is well known, the fact that films had no sound until the beginning of the 1930s did not mean that silent film performances were silent. The biggest cinema theatres had large orchestras on their payroll, others only had a single pianist. Stephen Horne (UK) is among the leading silent film musicians active today. He has played at festival performances all over the world and recorded music for a large number of DVD releases. While primarily a pianist, he also incorporates other instruments in his concerts, including the flute, accordion and glockenspiel, sometimes simultaneously. In 2022, he composed his first score for a large symphony orchestra: the score accompanies Henry King’s ‘Stella Dallas’ (1925), which we show during the festival with Stephen’s music. EVENT In an on-stage conversation with Thomas Christensen, Stephen Horne talks about the art of accompanying silent films.
