Alexandria... Why?
I filmtrilogien - navngivet efter hans fødeby Alexandria - fokuserer Chahine på det selvbiografiske. Denne film foregår under 2. verdenskrig, og hans alter ego Yehia drømmer om at blive skuespiller og at uddanne sig i USA. Filmen skildrer den store diversitet i det egyptiske samfund. Yehias familie er ikke rig, men sørger alligevel for at han kommer til at gå på en af de bedste skoler i Alexandria. Filmen blander veloplagt historiske optagelser fra krigens tid med den fiktive handling og er ikke uden grund en af Chahines mest populære film. Filmen berører ret åbenlyst temaet homoseksualitet, da en rig aristokratisk egypter forelsker sig i en engelsk soldat, som han egentlig havde planlagt at dræbe.
