Danish on a Sunday: ‘Unruly’
Maren, a strongminded young woman, is seen by authorities to be promiscuous and is therefore sent to the women’s institution in the small island of Sprogø. Here she is to learn how to behave as a proper young woman. She has to share a room with Sørine who has already internalised the story about herself and has learned to behave properly. Sørine is to help Maren settle in Sprogø and help her change her behaviour. But Maren does not comply with the system which ends up having fatal consequences for both herself and for Sørine. The film is inspired by actual events on the women’s institution of Sprogø in Denmark in the 1930’s.

Maren, en stærkvillet ung kvinde, ses af myndighederne som uhøflig og promiskuøs. Bekymret for, at hendes uregerlige adfærd vil opildne andre, sendes hun væk til en kvindeinstitution på Sprogø. Her skal hun lære at opføre sig som en ordentlig ung kvinde. Hun skal dele værelse med Sørine, der allerede har internaliseret historien om sig selv og har lært at opføre sig ordentligt. Sørine skal hjælpe Maren med at slå sig til rette på Sprogø og hjælpe med at ændre hendes adfærd, men Marens modstand mod systemet fører til frygtelige konsekvenser for dem begge. Filmen er inspireret af virkelige hændelser fra kvindeinstitutionen på Sprogø i Danmark i 1930’erne.
