In the mid-1960’s, a number of bookstores in Copenhagen were selling British made hardcore pornographic films on 8mm, which were smuggled to Denmark on cruise liners, and in the boots of cars. In 1969, Denmark repealed their obscenity laws, liberalising the production and distribution of hardcore pornography; a new industry was born.
The ‘Sex 69’ Copenhagen Sex Fair of 1969 drew worldwide attention to this significant change in policy. It also attracted British pornographers to set up business in Denmark, exporting their films back to the UK in lorries containing bacon and light aircrafts where it remained illegal to distribute pornography. Danish businesses, such as the Color Climax Corporation, were also involved in exporting their films to the UK, and other countries, benefiting from a global demand for pornographic material.
In this talk, Dr. Oliver Carter explores the impact of the Sex 69 fair and the change in legislation it had on the European trade in hardcore pornography. He will be joined by a group of speakers, made up of academics, historians and pornographers, for a debate on the subject, which will be illustrated with clips taken from news broadcasts and films.
Total event time: 60 minutes. The talk is in English.
