Fords klassiker er en underholdende meditation over amerikanske helteidealer og tæmningen af Det Vilde Vesten. Filmen fortæller i flashbacks historien om, hvordan James Stewarts milde og idealistiske advokat, med hjælp fra John Waynes bredskuldrede revolvermand, tager kampen op mod den psykopatiske forbryder Liberty Valance (Lee Marvin). Vera Miles spiller kvinden mellem de to. Filmens slutmorale opsummerer dens tematik: ”When the legend becomes fact, print the legend”.
