Cinema exhibition 2006

The annual report for 2006 from Statistics Denmark shows that film exhibition in Denmark retains its role as a successful niche in the industry. 12.6 million tickets were sold in cinemas in 2006, including 3.1 for national films – a ratio that has been stable for six years with only minor variations.

Market share2006 saw the release of 21 Danish feature films, and a number of feature-length documentary films. Total admissions to these films swept up a 25 percent market share, attaining the highest market share for the Nordic countries and a fifth place for EU countries.

Average admissions per titleThe average number of admissions to the 21 feature film releases, together with the documentary film "Gasolin'", was 142,000; the average number of admissions to an American title was 64,000.

Top 20All of eight Danish films made their imprint on the Top 20. "Casino Royale" with Danish Mads Mikkelsen playing Le Chiffre took first place, and is followed by three national films at fifth, sixth and ninth place: "We Shall Overcome", the most successful Danish film of the year in terms of international exposure and awards, "After the Wedding", an Oscar competitor, and "Clash of Egos", a satire on the success of Danish cinema.

Admissions high for the 1st quarter 2007Almost at the end of the 1st quarter of 2007, Danish films have already brought in some 1.1 million admissions, giving a market share of 40 percent. Six films have been released, while another 19 feature films will be released during the year.

The 2nd quarter will see the release of Lone Scherfig's "Hjemve", Giacomo Campeotto's "The Lost Treasure of the Knights Templar II", Hans Fabian Wullenweber's "Cecilie", Peter Schønau Fog's "The Art of Crying", Asger Leth's "Ghosts of Cité Soleil", Daniel Espinosa's "Outside Love", Jannik Hastrup and Flemming Quist Møller's "Cykkelmyggen and dansemyggen", and Ole Bornedal's "The Substitute".
