Sixty Nordic films are
presently screening in Rome at the Sguardi del Nord Festival -
Nordic Visions (28 March to 17 April) which opened Friday
by Finnish filmmaker Mika Kaurismäki.
Besides a retrospective
of the Kaurismäki brothers, the programme includes the collected works of
Lars von Trier, together with Dogme, dance and documentary films. Danish
guests include film and media professor Peter Schepelern, poet Søren Ulrik
Thomsen, and theologian Niels Christian Hvidt.
As Danish cinema is
currently regarded as the most prominent of the Nordic film industries in
Italy the organizers have included a large number of Danish films.
Besides Trier's works and the early Dogme films the selection will include
works by Susanne Bier, Ole Christian Madsen, Ole Bornedal, Torben Anton
Svendsen, Carl Th. Dreyer, as well as a number of documentary filmmakers,
including Jørgen Leth, Jesper Jargil, Katja Forbert Petersen and Amsterdam
winners Sami Saif and Phie Ambo.
To mark the festival a
catalogue of Nordic films has been published in Italian and English. Also
published is a booklet containing ten of Søren Ulrik Thomsen's poems in
translation.The Danish side of the
project has been organized by Anders Toftgaard for the Danish Academy in Rome in collaboration with the
Italian Institute of philosophical Studies (Naples), while the Nordic event
as a whole has been organized by Vivian Norris de Montaigu for
the art cinema Filmstudio 80. The DFI, the Danish Literature
Information Centre, the Royal Danish Embassy in Rome, Carlsberg, and Royal
Greenland have contributed to the funding of the project.
