FILMHOUSE. This month at the Cinematheque: New voices from South Africa, Clint Eastwood and Ettora Scola, together with a taste of indie-queen Kelly Reichardt's stories from America's underbelly. Watch how Lynn Shelton pushes the boundaries of the buddy movie, how Ji-woon Kim pays tribute to Leone in an explosive high-budget-action film on Asian Night, and sit back and experience Fatih Akin's music opus from the Bosphorus Strait.

Celebrating Clint Eastwood – still going strong

THE FILMHOUSE

The Filmhouse is not only home to the Cinematheque, screening films Tuesdays through to Sundays, but also to an extensive film library, the educational film studio FILM-X, a videotheque with some 1.500 titles available for viewing, a video & bookshop, and the café and restaurant SULT. The Filmhouse is also home to the Danish Film Institute, the national agency responsible for supporting and encouraging film and cinema culture.

The Cinematheque's monthly programme usually includes some 20-50 films with English dialogue or with English subtitles.

Normal ticket prices are 40 dkk for members and 65 dkk for non-members.

MEMBERSHIP

You can join the Cinematheque: annual membership is 250 dkk (for two living in the same household 300 dkk). There is a 50% discount for students and retired citizens. Members also enjoy free entry to a number of films throughout the year.

The Filmhouse is located in central Copenhagen at Gothersgade 55, opposite the Kings Garden and Rosenborg Castle.

BY BUS
The Bus line 350S stops almost at the main entrance to the Filmhouse. The stop at Kronprinsessegade is closest.


BY TRAIN OR METRO
The Filmhouse in an 8-10 minute walk from City Hall, and Nørreport Station,centre for trains, the Metro, and buses.

Film of the Month "Humpday"

"Are you man enough for a little man-on-man action? Lynn Shelton's film Humpday pushes the boundaries of the buddy movie right over the line," says Ben Walters in his Guardian write-up Humpday takes bromance love to another level. The film was a hit at Sundance in 2009 and won the Jury's Special Prize. Screening 10 consecutive days.

Kelly Reichardt is already a name at progressive festivals like Sundance and Rotterdam. Her films focus on the down-side of USA, where dreams have shattered. Three of Reichardt's feature films are included in the programme: among them "Old Joy" (2006) with singer-songwriter Bonnie 'Prince' Billy in the lead.

Carl Theodor Dreyer – screening this month

"Carl Theodor Dreyer is the most important director in Danish cinema. In international film history, too, he ranks as one of the greatest artists of all time," begins Dan Nissen in his extended biography of the director at www.carthdreyer.dk. This month, several of Dreyer's film will be screened, including:

Carl Theodor Dreyer – new website

The new Carl Theodor Dreyer website opened on 25 May www.carlthdreyer.dk. Carl Theodor Dreyer (1889-1968), the originator of La Passion de Jeanne d’Arc, The Word, Gertrud and Day of Wrath, is a Danish titan and ranks as one of international cinema's giants. On this website you can access a vast collection of original material from Dreyer's legacy, as well as articles about him. For example the two articles: … But am I loved?, Emilia van Hauen's article on "Gertud"; and Carl Theodor Dreyer, biographical articles.

Carl Theodor Dreyer – DVDs available at Cinematheque Film & Bookshop

Although the Dreyer films may not be screened this month with English subtitles, the films can be seen in the British Film Institute (BFI) DVD versions of Dreyer's classics. These are available from the DFI Film & Bookshop, located on the ground floor at the Filmhouse located by the cinemas and Café SULT. Each DVD costs 100 dkk. Asian Night: Sergio Leone meets John Woo in a spectacular kimchi-western

Concert pianist behind bars – German dialogue-English subtitles

In her childhood, 20-year-old Jenny was an internationally renowned concert pianist. Now she is charged with murder and sentenced to prison. The bitter old maid and former concert pianist Traude Krueger is the piano teacher at the prison. A professionsal relationship develops between them. The film will be introduced by DFI Film Commissioner Steen Bille and leading actress Hannah Herzsprung.

Friday Late Night – music from the Bosphorus Strait, Istanbul

"A Bosphorus-based 'Buena Vista Social Club' with cultural commentary thrown into the mix.
