Historical series in development for HBO Nordic

IN DEVELOPMENT. Rasmus Heisterberg and Per Fly are the two talents behind a new series in development for HBO Nordic, which is based on Martin Andersen Nexø's pivotal turn of the century novel "Pelle the Conqueror."

"Erobreren" (translates as "The Conqueror") is a new historical drama series in development for HBO Nordic. The series, which is to be comprised of eight 60-minute episodes, is based on volumes 2-4 of the major Danish literary classic "Pelle the Conqueror" by Martin Andersen Nexø.

Head writer is Rasmus Heisterberg, who has penned numerous feature films including "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo," "A Royal Affair" and last year's "In the Blood," his debut as director. Per Fly, who directed the Monica Zetterlund biopic "Waltz for Monica," is concept director of the series, which is in development by producer Meta Louise Foldager of SAM Productions.

The project has received development support from the Danish Film Institute's Public Service Fund. Claus Ladegaard, DFI Head of Film Support, says:

"'Erobreren' depicts a significant historical period and is based on a major literary work. For these reasons alone, the series is important and valuable as public service. It is a classic narrative to be interpreted and developed by some of Danish film's strongest talents. It will be interesting to see this coupled with HBO's originality and boldness when it comes to the serial format."

In 1987, the first volume of Martin Andersen Nexø's canonical work "Pelle the Conqueror" was made into a feature film of the same name, directed by Bille August and winner of numerous awards including the Palme d'Or and an Academy Award.
