Using film music is a really powerful tool

INTERVIEW. Martin Dirkov won this year's Danish Robert award for his score for 'Holy Spider' and will represent Denmark at the Nordic film composer award, the HARPA award, in late February. Here he shares his and director Ali Abbasi's thoughts behind the music for ‘Holy Spider’.

As the spider killer in Ali Abbasis 'Holy Spider' rides through Mashhad at night on his motorcycle, he is accompanied by "an absurd hero theme," explains Martin Dirkov about one of the ideas behind the music for the film. On the other hand, the female journalist Rahimi is accompanied by a more emotional theme. Until we get further into the film: "As the film progresses, the two themes start to overlap and open up to each other."

Martin Dirkov won the Danish Robert award for best original score on February 4th and was selected to represent Denmark for the Nordic film composer prize, the HARPA Nordic Film Composers Award, in Berlin on February 18th-19th.
