After the collapse of communism and the Soviet Union in the beginning of the 90¿s, almost all aid to Cuba was cut off. The Castro government was required to work out trade deals on normal market terms with each trading partner. Castro declared a national state of emergency - el periodo especial - in the time of peace and Castro tried to cast the events in the best possible and revolutionary light.
