Writing his will, Count Wolffhagen bequeaths his fortune to his daughter Edith and her fiancé, Baron von Sternberg. In secret, the count promises his friend, the shady moneylender Pendleton, that he will inherit everything if Edith and von Sternberg should die childless. When a fatal fall causes the count’s sudden death, Pendleton grows greedy and impatient. He summons a nefarious oriental criminal, Dr Gar el Hama, to help him get Edith out of the way.
