Harry Dalton er en vulkanolog, det er sendt ud for at studere vulkansk aktivitet i den lille by Dante's Peak. Her finder han beviser på, at bjerget snart vil eksplodere. Efter forgæves at have forsøgt at advare de skeptiske indbyggere, lykkes det ham at overtale borgmesteren til at kigge nærmere på sagen. Dalton får ret, og da vulkanen kommer i udbrud, må han og borgmesteren kæmpe en desperat kamp for deres liv.
