Margaret, Bernadette og Rose er tre unge irske kvinder, der i 1964 bliver anset for at være fristerinder. De bliver sendt i kloster, for at lære at opføre sig dydigt. Reglerne i klostret er meget strenge og overtrædelser straffes hårdt. Pigerne drømmer derfor om at vende tilbage til livet udenfor klostret.
