Arbejdskammeraterne Zhao og Liu er gamle venner og begge i halvtredserne. De er på en heftig druktur, da Liu pludseligt dør. Zao ønsker at opfylde et gammelt løfte til vennen og beslutter sig til at rejse de mange tusind km gennem Kina for at bringe hans lig hjem. Han har stort set ingen penge og altså en død mand med sig. Zhaos tragikomiske odyssé bringer ham i kontakt med alle slags kinesere i en verden, hvor skikke og værdier forandrer sig lynhurtigt. Baseret på en virkelig historie.
