Sporene gror ud af ord går på opdagelse bag forfatteren, kommunisten og ærkefæringen Jóanes Nielsens facade og søger ind til de mekanismer, der driver ham, for at portrættere manden, der har det skrevne ord så velsignet i sin magt. Filmen er Katrin Ottarsdóttirs tredje portrætfilm i hendes trilogi om færøske kunstnere og deres skabertrang.
