Kan man leve sit liv om i en film, spørger denne melankolske og sanselige historie om en filminstruktør, der mistede sit livs kærlighed Lena (Cruz) i en trafikulykke 14 år tidligere. Nu lever han en anonym tilværelse og har slettet alle spor, indtil hans sekretær begynder at grave i fortiden. “Måske den sørgeligste karakter, jeg nogensinde har skrevet. Og den største udfordring, jeg har givet Penélope indtil videre,” har Almodóvar sagt om den usikre skuespillerspire Lena.
