Dionne Warwick: Don't Make Me Over
Dionne Warwick er muligvis den mest sympatiske, dannede og respekterede sanger på planeten. Et fyrtårn med så meget kraft og kredibilitet, at det er lige til at smelte over. Kom med ind i hendes verden, og hør hende fortælle om opvæksten i New Jersey, hvor hun som så mange andre sorte sangstjerner blev ”skolet” i det lokale gospelkor. Hør også om hendes tidlige succes i Harlems berømte Apollo Theatre og årene som Burt Bacharach og Hal Davis’ favoritstemme og den næsten endeløse række at hits – ’Walk On By’, ’Do You Know the Way to San Jose’, ’Trains and Boats and Planes’ og ’Don't Make Me Over’, naturligvis.
Men spids først og fremmest ører, når hun fortæller om sit arbejde for LGBTQ+-bevægelsen og AIDS-forskningen og sin utrættelige kamp for lige rettigheder for alle amerikanske borgere. Og så er der lige historien om venskabet med Marlene Dietrich og om, hvordan hun af hende lærte at bygge bro over kulturelle skel – og klæde sig stilfuldt. Og ikke mindst historien om den dag, hun inviterede Snoop Dogg og hele klanen af ”Bitch”- og ’ho”-rimende L.A.-gangsterrappere til donuts og morgenkaffe og fortalte dem alle, hvordan man egentlig bør tale til andre mennesker – særligt kvinder!
