Film Education: A User’s Guide – The Massive Open Online Course

The online course 'Film Education: A User’s Guide' was delivered via the FutureLearn portal, which has a ready-made platform for presentations and is already used by millions of learners across the globe. The course is free, taught in English and is open to participants from around the world.

The main providers of MOOC content are DFI, BFI, Karpos, Vision Kino, the Cinémathèque Française and The Film Space. The topics covered in the course include:

  • Defining film education
  • Choosing, watching, talking about film
  • Analyzing film
  • Making film
  • Pre-school settings
  • Access and resources
  • Cinema, archive and film festival settings
  • National strategies, structures and models
  • Evaluating impact

The first run of the MOOC was in March 2020 followed by a second run in October 2020. In total 5.439 people signed up for the course till now, of whom a little more than 50% were from Europe – and the rest from countries across the world.

FutureLearn has decided to let the course run for the next few years, though this will be without moderation by educators.
