Film and Debate about Afghanistan

FILMHOUSE. The documentary "Human Terrain" is on Wednesday. Afterwards a panel of experts will debate the complex relationship between war and culture.

What notion of culture should the western forces in Afghanistan employ? The documentary deals with the controversial Human Terrain System which the American army established in 2006. American soldiers are assigned basic training in anthropology though the main objective remains defeating the enemy in vulnerable areas of Afghanistan.

"Human Terrain" was recently the center of discussion in a sold-out Kino Babylon at the Berlin Festival. Now the Filmhouse opens the doors for a debate in English that will foreground the Danish military efforts in Afghanistan.

One of the directors behind "Human Terrain", the esteemed professor and debater James Der Derian from Brown University, will participate in the discussion in the Cinematheque. In addition the panel includes professor and head of the Center for Military Studies Mikkel Vedby, foreign editor on the newspaper Politiken Michael Jarlner and lecturer at the Institute for Anthropology Birgitte Refslund Sørensen. Professor at the Insititute for Political Science Lene Hansen will moderate.

The event is organized in collaboration with Politiken Plus and the Centre for Advanced Study at the University of Copenhagen.
