Thomas Vinterberg's 'Another Round' was garnered with the Cannes Official Selection label in June and enjoyed its in-cinema world premiere at the Toronto Film Festival earlier in September.
Now at the San Sebastian Film Festival, the drama took home three awards as the festival celebrated this year's winners Saturday evening:
The leading cast of Mads Mikkelsen, Thomas Bo Larsen, Magnus Millang and Lars Ranthe shared the Silver Shell for Best Actor. This marks only the third time the award has been presented to several actors from the same film. 'Another Round' also received the Feroz Zinemaldia award given by the Spanish press to the best film in competition as well as the Signis Award from the Catholic Film Organisation.
Earlier this month, 'Another Round' won the Art House Cinema Award presented by the French Arthouse Cinema Association, AFCAE, as the best film among 12 official Cannes 2020 titles.
'Another Round' has its starting point in the theory that we should be born with a small amount of alcohol in our blood, and that modest inebriation opens our minds to the world and increases our creativity. Heartened by that theory, four weary high school teachers embark on an experiment to maintain a constant level of intoxication throughout the workday.
Several international media have praised the film for its portrayal of drinking culture and midlife crisis. "Ordinary middle class, middle-aged men and their mid-life dwindling self-esteem don’t often get the sexy big-screen treatment, or any treatment at all. Vinterberg makes it all somehow compelling, and more than a little sobering," Screen International wrote.
Also, IndieWire's annual critics' poll from the Toronto Film Festival places 'Another Round' prominently in a number of categories.
Thomas Vinterberg wrote the script with Tobias Lindholm. Sisse Graum Jørgensen and Kasper Dissing produced for Zentropa in co-production with Film i Väst, Zentropa Sweden, Topkapi Films and Zentropa Netherlands with support from the Danish Film Institute, TV 2 DENMARK, Eurimages, the Netherlands Film Fund, Svenska Filminstitutet, the Netherlands Film Production Incentive and the MEDIA Programme of the European Union. International sales are handled by TrustNordisk.
The film has secured a release in the US through distributor Samuel Goldwyn Films and is sold to more than 30 territories worldwide. Coming up in the weeks ahead are screenings at the Hamburg and London Film Festivals as well as a broad cinema release in France set for 14 October.
'Another Round' premiered in Denmark on 24 September.
