This film portrait of the Danish composer Carl Nielsen approaches the artist and the man from various angles. His instrumental music is illustrated by sequences filmed during concerts and rehearsals in various countries alternating with illustrations of his sources of inspiration. Quotations from Carl Nielsen's extensive writings on the nature and character of music are interspersed. The portrait, which included biographical information, is unpretentious in tone. The aim is to show the composer »in his shirt-sleeves«.
