Inspired by rather than literally transferring Leif Panduro's 1960 novel to film, Edward Fleming used only part of the novel to tell his own story of Thomas, the high-school son of a petit bourgeois family, who in 1939, oblivious of world events, is busy learning a lot about life's other aspects from a neighbouring family with a more artistic lifestyle and definitely of more relaxed sexual morals.
