Big girls don't cry

Louise Unmack Kjeldsen, Denmark, 2009

40 min.DK/Documentary

Maisha has lived with her foster family since her mum was deported to Tanzania. Maisha's teenage riot is in full blossom, affecting everyone around her. She has to call her mum once a week to stay in touch. But Maisha hates these calls. Instead she plans a trip to Tanzania to face her mum and tell her just how stupid she thinks she is. Has her mother ended in prostitution or committed crime again? The mother has told her on the phone that she has started a chicken farm, but Maisha is bottled up on the mother's lies. Maisha reunites with her mother in Dar-Es-Salaam. Sadly, their happiness is short-lived: Where is the chicken farm the mother has talked about? Maisha is trying to get a clear answer. Finally her mother decides to tell the truth. Back home in Denmark Maisha comes to a realization: She wants to do something with her life. She loves her mother. But she will never be like her.
