Seaweed - Peasants in the Ocean

Malene Ravn, Bodil Trier, Denmark, 1989

39 min.DK/Documentary

The film is shot in the sea around Danajon, the reef of the Philippines where the seaweed is grown, from which the substance of carageenan is made. The people there were fishermen before, but now they are farmers living at sea. They are always threatened by typhoons that suddenly arrive and can destroy everything. And they have the constant fear that the foreign companies, which they work for, stop the demand for seaweed - they have nowhere else to sell. Carageenan is used as starch (E 407) in the food industry.
