Under anden verdenskrig får Sophie Vasseur, en fattig ung pige, arbejde som akkompagnatrice for en smuk og forkælet sangerinde, hvis mand, en velhavende forretningsmand, ikke helt kan beslutte sig for, hvor meget han vil samarbejde med den tyske besættelsesmagt. Sophie beundrer sangerinden grænseløst, men finder efterhånden ud af, at hun ikke er så fejlfri, som Sophie troede.
