The Toronto International Film Festival has announced the films in their Contemporary World Cinema programme, a lineup that includes two Danish titles: Ole Christian Madsen's "Superclásico" and Martin Zandvliet's "A Funny Man".
Superclásico
Ole Christian Madsen will be visiting the Toronto festival for the fourth time, having previously participated with "Kira's Reason – A Love Story", "Prague" and the huge domestic box office hit "Flame & Citron".
"Superclásico" is a comedy set in Buenos Aires. Anna (Paprika Steen) is living out her dream as a sports agent and is about to marry a feted footballer (Sebastian Estevanez), when suddenly her ex-husband Christian (Anders W. Berthelsen) shows up with their teenage son, supposedly to get her to sign the divorce papers …
Toronto marks the film's international premiere. "Superclásico", released in Denmark in March, is travelling to several more international film events this fall.
Lars Bredo Rahbek and Signe Leick Jensen have produced for Nimbus Film. The Match Factory is handling international sales.
A Funny Man
Comedy also plays a part in Martin Zandvliet's "A Funny Man", albeit in a different sense.
Zandvliet's character-driven drama takes us behind the façade of Denmark's greatest comedian Dirch Passer and tells the story of a tragic figure who lived for attention while at the same time desperately wanting to break free of his funnyman image.
The film will premiere next week in Denmark and is up for its international release in Toronto, where Zandvliet made a strong impression two years ago with his highly acclaimed feature debut "Applause".
"A Funny Man" is produced by Mikael Christian Rieks for Koncern Film, and Tine Klint of LevelK is handling international sales.
Last titles still to come
Two Danish filmmakers have already been announced as participants in the festival's Special Presentations programme: Lars von Trier's disaster fable "Melancholia" and Danish director Nicolas Winding Refn's US production "Drive".
The festival will be announcing more titles over the next weeks.
