Wirecard was Germany's answer to Silicon Valley. Living proof that ‘Made in Germany’ could stay relevant in the 21st century, beyond cars and manufacturing. In early 2020, a gaping hole of more than two billion dollars is found in the company’s books. Then everything unravels quickly: The CEO is arrested. The COO vanishes. The stock price tumbles. Widespread fraud is revealed. Thousands lose their jobs and even more lose their money. But then things get even stranger. Sex and crime. Lies and greed. Secret services and money laundering. Threats and lives ruined. These are ingredients of fictional stories we know, but here we face a mind-boggling reality taken to new heights by notorious megalomaniacs.
